What is the difference between Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy?

Answer is:

1   Hypnosis:

Hypnosis is a technical term for a natural state of mind.  Hypnosis is a natural state of relaxation and focused concentration.  Brain scans show that the brain enters into a specific state under hypnosis, similar to the time just before you fall asleep when one enters the alpha state.  This is a very pleasant state of mind, people simply feel very relaxed.  It is a normal state of mind, therefore many people do not even feel they are in hypnosis, but simply very relaxed.  During the alpha state, the mind is very open to imagery and subconscious material emerges more freely.  There is an enhancement of emotional learning and increased insight.  The hypnotic state is frequently experienced during times of daydreaming, prayer or meditation, or “highway hypnosis” when we’ve been staring at the road for prolonged periods of time.

2   Hypnotherapy:

Hypnotherapy refers to the process of psychotherapy with a client who is in the hypnotic altered state of consciousness.  In the hypnotic state there is ability for accelerated learning combined with the ability to access unconscious or preconscious material.  Therefore, the combination of hypnosis with effective psychotherapy can speed up and enhance the therapeutic process as compared with traditional talk therapies. Hypnotherapy attempts to address an individual's subconscious mind, using the power of suggestion for beneficial change. A hypnotherapist uses hypnosis to give relevant, positive beneficial suggestions to help an individual bring about the change they desire.

Can I be Hypnotized?

Answer is:

1   Yes.

In the late 1950's Stanford University learned through subsequent studies that any person with normal intelligence can be hypnotized.  Some are more easily hypnotized than others.  The person must want to be hypnotized. Hypnosis is a natural, though altered, state of mind. You enter some form of use you haven’t been paying attention. Everyone goes through natural, altered states of hypnosis several times a day, like when you are driving and pass your turn-off because before they fall asleep, and as they come into wakefulness. Therefore, most people can enter hypnotic relaxation easily, provided they want to.

How will I know I am hypnotized?

Answer is:

1   There is no such a thing as a hypnotized feeling and most clients on completion would say they ?felt deeply relaxed and aware?. Others may feel lightness or a tingling feeling, others feel heaviness while others report they did not feel anything. However, during hypnosis, unconscious awareness expands, and clears space for the issue in focus. The positive change in your behavior after the sessions is the most important aspect of your hypnotherapy session.

Can a person in hypnosis be controlled?

Answer is:

1   No. It only appears that way in stage hypnosis. Professional hypnosis is quite different. A hypnotherapist is there to help with your issues and needs your participation with the process yet you are always in control. If the hypnotherapist were to give you suggestions that you didn?t agree with or were morally against your beliefs, you would either reject them.

Can a hypnotist make me do something I don't want to do?

Answer is:

1   All hypnosis is actually "self-hypnosis." You are allowing the hypnotist to guide you into your deeper and broader memory and other resources. Since it is a 100% consent state, no one can hypnotize you against your will. You are free to reject and receive any suggestion at any time.

Can I get "stuck" in the hypnotic state?

Answer is:

1   You can't get stuck. The hypnotist counts you out, and almost always you will hear the count. Since hypnotic levels are altered states between being fully awake and being completely asleep, you would merely fall asleep if you didn?t hear the count, and wake up when you are ready.

Will I reveal any secrets when hypnotized?

Answer is:

1   No.

Hypnosis is not a lie detector or a truth serum that makes people incapable of lying or keeping secrets. You will not reveal any intimate secrets you would not tell while awake. Since you are in charge, and letting yourself be hypnotized, your own mind determines how much or how little you wish to contribute to a hypnosis session. You can just as freely answer and not answer questions in a hypnotic state as you do in a wide-awake one.

    What is subliminal hypnosis?

    Answer is:

1   Subliminal - "existing or functioning below the threshold of consciousness" Hypnosis - "a trancelike state that resembles sleep but is induced by a person whose suggestions are readily accepted by the subject". The subliminal aspect allows suggestions to enter your mind without the blocking and over analysis of the conscious mind. The hypnosis portion opens your mind to modify your behavior and realigning your thought patterns to your true goals. Together these two techniques will empower you to accomplish anything you want!
