How to give negative feedback to employees?

Hi, today we're here to answer the question, how do you give negative feedback to employees? I'm Jordan Goldrich, I'm an executive leadership coach, and I'm here in beautiful La Jolla. And for some reason or other, my friend asked me how do you do this, given that we were having a wonderful time. So there are two secrets: the first secret is that you actually have to care that the person is successful.

Answer is:

1   Do it early enough before you're so angry that you just want to get rid of them.

So you have to do it early enough before you're so angry that you just want to get rid of them. The second secret is, how do you say it? And then you say it in a non-judgmental way. So let me give you an example if you and I are having a conversation, and we're out in a field somewhere.

And you notice that I'm absent-mindedly walking backward as we talk. And you notice that behind me is a cliff, wouldn't it be the most humane thing you could do to say Jordan, if you continued walking back the way you are, you're going to fall off the cliff and hurt yourself.

In the same way, you might say Jordan, if you continue getting complaints from employees and from other departments, that's not going to go well with you. So having said that, two things are very important. The first one is that you want to do it early. Most managers do not want to come down with the boom. The problem is if you wait, I'm on the edge of the cliff like this, and I'm going to fall off.

So you're actually doing me a favor doing it early. The second piece is you have to be able to say it in such a way that you're not labeling me as bad. You're pointing out Jordan in this situation, these are the things you're doing, and these are the impact. And by the way, if that keeps up, there are some consequences down the road.

3   So to Recap...

So again, how do you give negative feedback to employees? And the answer is have compassion, care about them and be very specific and behavioral about their actions, the impact and the consequences.

How to find and choose an executive coach?

Hi, today we're here to answer the question, how do you find and choose an executive coach? I'm Jordan Goldrich; I am an executive leadership coach. And I'm here in beautiful La Jolla California, getting ready to have dinner with some friends. And one of them keeps asking me these questions. Like how do you choose an executive coach?

Answer is:

1   So, I want to talk to you about a theory.

If you had invested 10 million dollars of your own money in a business, and suddenly you became concerned that you were going to be successful, and you wanted to find and hire an executive coach. If you were introduced to someone who had started his own or her own business and had been successful. And at the same time, I had also coached several other people on how to start a similar business to yours and had been successful. But had never even graduated high school.

And you had a choice between that person and a choice between somebody with a Ph.D. in psychology, an MBA, and somebody who had been an executive in a major corporation. But had never run a business like yours, and never started a business. Which one would you choose? And to me, that is what makes this conversation difficult.
It is partly about what are your credentials, but it's also about your experience. In my experience, when I've had coaches, some of them did not have a background in my area. I was the chief operations officer of a health care company. And the person that I hired taught me lean and Six Sigma, and how do you apply that in a service business. But he had no background in health care whatsoever.
My recollection is he had his BA, but he didn't have his master's, it didn't matter. My other experience has been sometimes I get people with a ton of experience in my area, and they're not helpful at all. So you really have to interview people, you have to see if there's a connection, if you connect. In addition, I would also recommend that you find some recommendations from people that you know and trust.
