What are Meibomian glands?

They are your tear glands. Tear glands disease is one of the major causes of dry eyes. Lipiflow therapy only takes 12 minutes. Special heat pads are applied to your eyelids. This will help restore the working conditions of your damaged tear glands.

The procedure is designed to restore your tear film production and hopefully, you will become less dependent on eye drops for relief.

Can I manage my dry eyes with Scleral lenses?

Hello, I am Dr. Diana Ngo from Ella Eyes.

I'm going to help you understand how dry eyes can affect your daily eye health and the consequences of not treating this overwhelming and widespread condition. My aim is to break down the different types of dry eye and their treats.
This will give you some insight into your own condition to help you live a more comfortable and productive life when it comes to your ocular health and treatment.

Remember Dr. Ngo knows!

Answer is:

1   Yes, you can manage dry eyes with scleral lenses. They are a type of specialty contact lense that essentially acts as a SHIELD to protect your cornea, while providing you with clear vision.

2   They create a chamber between the lenses and the eye. This holds a pool of tears sitting in front of your eyes, which prevents the eyes from drying out.

This makes scleral lenses an effective solution for people suffering from dry eyes while wearing contact lenses. It is also a great alternative to soft contact lenses and even glasses.

1   The answer is yes, overuse of electronics can increase the progression of nearsightedness. Globally, we are seeing an increasing number of young children having rapid prescription changes and or needing glasses younger than ever before.

Normally, this is expected due to the growth factor. But what we are seeing is the rapid changes to their prescription and near accommodation. This indicates that increasing screen time causes a rise to their accommodative issues which then contribute to the progression of nearsightedness.

Some of the common systemic medications that can cause dry eyes are used to treat diabetes, high blood pressure and thyroid conditions. Please inform your eye doctor if you are taking any of these medications.

Can my acne medication cause me to have dry eyes?

Answer is:

1   Yes, acne medication can cause you to have dry eyes. Systemic acne medication such as Accutane is an example.

2   The purpose of acne medication is to dry out the oil and sebum that are collected at the oil glands on your face. However, the treatment is not isolated to only glands under the surface of our skin.

3   They actually also dry out the tear glands that are within our eyelids, making these tear glands shrink and atrophy over time. If we have no tear glands in our lids, then our eyes cannot make tears, which can lead to uncomfortable dry eyes.

Can makeup cause dry eyes?

Answer is:

1   The answer is yes, makeup can cause you to have dry eyes. The foundation of makeup is coverage. Many types of makeup are designed to cover blemishes and are hard to remove.

2   Also the ingredients on some of the makeups are not healthy for the skin, especially the area around the eyes. Prolonged use of makeup can have detrimental consequences to the tear glands that are embedded within our eyelids. Once these tear glands are clogged, they will start to atrophy and shrink then die off. Your tear production will then become compromised and soon nonexistent.

3   Visit your eye doctor for a complete evaluation to see if your tear glands are functioning; to what extent are they functioning, and if not, do you need to start treatment to repair your tear glands.

What is the least expensive way to treat dry eyes?

Hello, I am Dr. Diana Ngo from Ella Eyes.

This will give you some insight into your own condition to help you live a more comfortable and productive life when it comes to your ocular health and treatment.

Remember Dr. Ngo knows!

Answer is:

1   The least expensive way to treat dry eyes is to NOT develop dry eyes at all. However, that is not possible.

2   Dry eyes are becoming the leading cause of visual discomfort as well as the most common ocular health problem.

You can start treating dry eyes with over the counter eye drops. I recommend preservative free drops. Preservatives are known to cause and exacerbate dry eyes. However, artificial tears may not be enough. This is one of the reasons why it is essential for you to visit your eye doctor.

Your eye doctor can diagnose and offer clinical advice on your treatment. Ask your eye doctor for their recommendations.

If you haven't gotten an eye exam this past year, even if you have perfect vision, I highly recommend seeing your local eye doctor to get a full eye exam.

You may not need glasses or contacts, but a comprehensive eye exam will help to determine the ocular health of your eyes. A dilated exam can determine if you have high blood pressure, diabetes or other disease pathology that can cause vision loss.

What is the reason my eyes won't stop watering?

Hello, I am Dr. Diana Ngo from Ella Eyes.

I'm going to help you understand how dry eyes can affect your daily eye health and the consequences of not treating this overwhelming and widespread condition. My aim is to break down the different types of dry eye and their treats.
This will give you some insight into your own condition to help you live a more comfortable and productive life when it comes to your ocular health and treatment. I'm frequently asked "What is the reason my eyes won't stop watering?".

Remember Dr. Ngo knows!

Answer is:

1   The reason why your eyes won't stop watering is because they are dry. When your eyes are watering it is a reflex reaction from your eyes being dry and irritated. Your eyes are overcompensating and will overproduce tears, which leads to watery eyes.

The problem here is that the reflex tear is very harsh. And we'll make your eyes even more dry reflex. Tears are produced by different glands and they do not have the same pH as your tear film. There are many different treatments for dry eyes. I highly recommend seeing your eye doctor to see what treatment is best for you.

Can my eye doctor detect if I have early signs of diabetes?

Dr. Diana Ngo from Ella Eyes. I'm frequently asked

Can my eye doctor detect if I have early signs of diabetes?

Answer is:

1   The answer is yes. Your eye doctor can be one of the first to detect if you have early signs of diabetes.

We have very sensitive equipment such as retina cameras and topographies to capture images of the back of your eyes.

These images will help your eye doctor to view the retina in detail for any signs of diabetic changes. Sometimes we are able to see diabetic changes so early that your primary doctor has yet to picked it up. Your eye doctor usually works in conjunction with your primary care doctor to help detect and manage any changes to your diabetic conditions.

That is why early screening tests at your eye doctor are so important. Tell your eye doctor, if you have diabetes so that your eye doctor can make the appropriate recommendation on what tests to perform for you.

Can my sleep apnea cause me to have dry eyes?

This is Dr. Dan and no from Ella Eyes I've been asked

Can my sleep apnea cost me to have dry eyes?

Answer is:

1   The answer is yes. People with sleep apnea who wear a C-PAP mask during sleep over time will develop dry eyes from prolonged use of the C pap. The C-PAP helps provide airflow to their nose, which helps prevent snoring and choking during sleep.

But the mechanism that provides air to the nose also causes air flow to the eyes, which then leads to dry eyes from chronic exposure. The chronicity of this condition can lead to severe dry eyes over time so early detection and prevention is important to the overall health of the ocular surface of the eyes.

Tell your eye doctor, if you are using a C-PAP machine or have any signs of sleep apnea.

Contact lenses overall are great for most sports, especially daily contact lenses. The ease of wear and care for daily contact lenses is the most attractive mode of correction for most people.  It is usually safe and the risks of infection are usually minimal with the proper usage.

However, the usual soft contact lenses get dry too easily for most extreme sports like skiing, where the weather is extreme.  Extreme sports and extreme environments require specialty contact lenses such as scleral lenses or ortho-k.

Ask your eye doctor which contact lenses are best for you if you are into extreme sports or living in an extreme environment.

Answer is:

1   Autoimmune conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, MS, sarcoidosis, Lupus, Thyroid, Sjogren's syndrome, or any of the "itis" disease, will cause dry eyes because the root cause of these conditions is inflammation.

Due to the chronic nature of these conditions, our bodies are in constant inflammatory flare ups.  The eyes are made of different combinations of tissues, and some of these tissues will go into inflammatory responses when our bodies have an attack.  The constant attacks will cause dry eyes over time.

There is no relief for this type of dry eyes except for anti-inflammatory drugs.

Let your eye doctor know if you have any of these conditions. Dry eyes can be managed and you can get relief from it, just not cured.

Why do my eyes feel more dry after COVID-19?

1   There are multiple reasons why people are complaining about dry eyes after COVID-19.

Since COVID started, most people work from home and through virtual means. We are seeing an increase in screen time from everyone, especially from young people who are going through virtual schooling. The increased screen time and lack of blinking while staring at the screen causes people of all ages to develop dry eyes as well as other visual complications, such as a significant shift in their prescription toward nearsightedness.

The masks also create opportunities for dry eyes. As we breathe, our breaths are vented upward by our masks… this causes the air to circulate and blow into our eyes constantly.
Combined this cycle with increased screen time creates the perfect situation for dry eyes.

Ask your eye doctor how to circumvent this vicious cycle.
