Why do autoimmune conditions cause dry eyes?
Hello, I am Dr. Diana Ngo from Ella Eyes.
I'm going to help you understand how dry eyes can affect your daily eye health and the consequences of not treating this overwhelming and widespread condition. My aim is to break down the different types of dry eye and their treats.
This will give you some insight into your own condition to help you live a more comfortable and productive life when it comes to your ocular health and treatment.
Remember Dr. Ngo knows!
1 Autoimmune conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, MS, sarcoidosis, Lupus, Thyroid, Sjogren's syndrome, or any of the "itis" disease, will cause dry eyes because the root cause of these conditions is inflammation.
Due to the chronic nature of these conditions, our bodies are in constant inflammatory flare ups. The eyes are made of different combinations of tissues, and some of these tissues will go into inflammatory responses when our bodies have an attack. The constant attacks will cause dry eyes over time.
There is no relief for this type of dry eyes except for anti-inflammatory drugs.
Let your eye doctor know if you have any of these conditions. Dry eyes can be managed and you can get relief from it, just not cured.
