What is keratoconus?

Hello, my name is Dr. Adam Rosa with North Coast Optometry and one question that my patients ask me a lot is "what is keratoconus?"

Keratoconus is a medical condition that affects the front part of the eye called cornea.

A normal cornea has a perfectly round shape to it, but an eye with keratoconus will begin to thin with time and create a bulge in the lower half of the cornea.

The irregular shaped cornea can cause the vision to become distorted and extremely blurry. Oftentimes the only way to correct that vision is by putting a special contact lens on the front surface of the eye. That helps create a more regular surface again.
